If you had to choose five words to describe James Sirius Potter, those five cover at least a good portion of what makes him, who he is. Sirius has a smart mouth, he doesn’t generally watch what he says around anyone (no matter who you are – unless you happen to be Claire, then on occasion, it does happen) and he speaks his mind most of the time. You might consider him a bit of an asshole – most people do. He never quite grew out of the teenage sarcasm, though it has gotten a little more cynical over time.
As a teenager, his impulsive acts and recklessness landed him in hot water more than once – whether it was pulling pranks with Claire (and somehow getting blamed for most of them, while the Claire, the prefect, got away clean) or pulling an insane stunt on the Quidditch pitch that either won the match or landed him in the hospital wing (or in some cases both). As an adult, most of this behavior was turned over to risk taking during his time in the field as an auror. On many occasions, more than he can remember at this point, his actions have definitely pulled them through, but not without the cost of injuring himself.
Though he does act quickly and without entirely thinking things through most of the time, that isn’t to say Sirius isn’t rather intelligent. He wasn’t top of his year, though he did get at least an “Exceeds Expectations” on all his OWL and NEWT tests before leaving school. Sirius is a good problem solver, though he usually doesn’t look for a second solution, instead allowing his impulsive side run with the first thing he comes up with.
One’s habits are just as much a part of them as any other personality trait – and the one habit that Sirius has had since he was a teen that he has never let go of is drinking. It started with a few fire whiskeys at a party when he was almost fourteen years old. By the time he was fifteen he was getting drunk at all the parties – and by the time he was seventeen he was pocketing a flask of whiskey on a regular basis. There were times when it got much, much worse – and in recent months he’s been able to cut back, but to this day he still carries a flask of whiskey with him at all times.
All of this, plus a horribly paranoid side that came about after the death of his wife and two daughters, has led the man we know as James Sirius Potter to question his own sanity on more than one occasion. At some points, he hasn’t wondered if his reckless actions were subconscious suicide attempts – though he knows he would never be able to leave the rest of his family behind. The man is plagued by nightmares as well as demons to deal with during the day – yet some how, he seems to embrace the insanity – and allow it to fuel his reckless, impulsive drinking, while cleverly coming up with his next sarcastic comeback.
history
James Sirius Potter came into this world on August 15th, the first of three children to be born to Harry Potter and Ginny Weasley. From the time he could walk, Sirius was getting into things – especially when he was with another infant, by the name of Claire Pierce. At a young age, Sirius became very adventurous – and at the age of 9, with his younger brother Albus who at the time was 8, wandered out to explore their Uncle Charlie’s property – after all it was the first family gathering they had ever had there. Unfortunately, the boys ran into a nest of dragon eggs – and it was only minutes before the mother dragon was back and furious.
Sirius pushed his younger brother out of the way, but sustained a severe burn and bite through his knee by a long fang. Though it healed up fairly well at the time, there will always be a hole shaped scar on the side of his knee – at his young age he could never have imagined it would be one of so many more injuries that end up causing a lasting injury.
Fast forward a couple of years and Sirius and Claire were headed to Hogwarts for the first time. Sirius was sorted into Gryffindor and Claire into Ravenclaw. Though they were now in separate houses, they still saw each other more than ever and caused chaos around the school from year one with products supplied by Sirius’s Uncle George. The two were hardly ever bored – if they weren’t pranking, they were training for Quidditch – both of them managed to make the Quidditch teams in their first year (which had been unheard of since Harry had made the team in his first year).
Over the years, Sirius and Claire remained close, but Sirius never let it get further involved. He had considered it – but Claire didn’t enjoy going to parties with him (though he did drag her to some on occasion), and she didn’t drink. So instead, Sirius turned to flirting with girls at parties while he got drunk – but his fourth year he was already known for being a flirt, and he could more or less date any girl he wanted – and he took advantage of that.
During his final year at Hogwarts, Sirius was finally considering the idea of asking Claire out – he made a plan to do it and everything. Unfortunately, before be was able to go through with his plan, his most recent girlfriend (well, one of two…) came to tell him she was pregnant – and there was no question that it was his child. It took a while for it to sink in – he had to talk it over with Claire for hours before he really let himself believe it. In the end however, he did the right thing and gave it another shot with Kayla Hoff, the soon to be mother of his baby.
It was around that time that Sirius was offered a contract to play Quidditch professionally – which had been his dream job ever since he was four or five years old at his first professional Quidditch match. He had the contract for days, then weeks, then the teams agency needed an answer now. In the end, he decided to give up the dream of traveling the world with a Quidditch team to stay at home with his girlfriend and soon to be born daughter – besides, something told him that his skills might be better suited for the aurors department.
By the time Sirius finished his training and became an official auror, he was already a father to one daughter, Cassandra Marie Potter – and now engaged to Kayla. They married when he was nineteen years old they had their second daughter, Jessica Renee, by the time he was twenty. Sirius spent a lot of his time during those first three years learning from other aurors, but once he learned enough, he started picking up on things he didn’t like – such as papers changing the story on what happened in a homicide case, in some cases passing off what was clearly a homicide as an accidental death.
All of this made him extremely suspicious – and the only person who didn’t think he was entirely paranoid was Claire. The two of them spent long hours working on trying to prove that there was a new threat coming about, something bigger than anyone had anticipated – and something that everyone just wants to ignore and pretend isn’t happening.
After about three years of this – and lots of late nights sitting at a pub himself, getting drunk and pouring over papers, case files and suspected threat photos, his wife had finally had enough of it. She wanted a divorce – and so he moved out for a short while, staying at the Leaky Cauldron. Eventually he ended up having a one-night stand – but when he woke up the next morning, thinking he was holding his wife, he realized he needed to try and fix things, rather than run away from them – and he never regretted the decision to go back.
By the age of twenty seven, Sirius was promoted to the Head of the Department of Mysteries, with Claire as his second in command. This had been a surprise to him – but apparently the performance on their cases over the last several years had outranked everyone – even some of the senior aurors. Together, the two of them were practically unstoppable – and that was what made them perfect to run that department.
Things went well for a number of years – until he found himself in too deep in his conquest to learn more about this invisible new threat at the age of twenty nine. Someone found out he was digging – Sirius didn’t know who it was – and the attack came so quick, while he was alone and somewhat drunk, walking home from a pub to after a successful mission and a celebration dinner – one minute he was surrounded by men and the next he was waking up in the hospital with a brand new injury to his knee, shattered this time and a fractured spine among other life threatening injuries.
Magical healing can work wonders – and it probably saved his life – but it cannot fix everything in an instant. It was a couple years worth of healing, mostly laying in bed, in a recliner or even getting about in a wheelchair at times before he was getting back to himself again. For once in his life, Sirius entirely gave in to the need to heal – or at least as much as his restlessness would allow. Then, Claire of course, came up with a brilliant physical training plan for him that eventually got him back into good enough shape that he could return to work.
Originally, the healers had told him he would likely not be able to walk and that if he could, it would be difficult at best. By the end of a year of training, with Claire forcing him to stick with her plan and not push himself too far, too soon, he was able to get up and about again without much difficulty – by the end of two and a half years, he was back to running with her every morning. During that entire time, Claire was the only one outside his immediately family he really let in.
Sadly, only a couple years after that, when Sirius was thirty five, his home was invaded by the same man – he recognized his face (he later learned the mans name is Cato Blackwell). This time, the men went immediately for his most vulnerable spot – his right knee – making it impossible for him to walk. They incapacitated him to the point where he was barley conscious, unable to even reach for his wand, let alone do a damn thing as they murdered his wife and two daughters, now teenagers at ages eighteen and fifteen.
His injuries were extensive and for weeks, he barely said a word to anyone – still in shock over everything he had experienced. He spent months in the hospital that time recovering – after all, this time there was no one he could go home to and rely on for anything – for the first time in his life, he was more or less alone. This drove him further into his alcoholic tendencies than ever before – and he recovered much slower, not even having the motivation to stick to Claire’s physical training plans as he had the first time.
It was almost a year later before Sirius kicked himself into gear again – finally deciding that the only thing he could do, was to put a stop to the monster who had taken their lives – being depressed wasn’t going to get him anywhere, if anything, it meant that they had won. He continues to pursue his case to this day – because unofficially, Cato Blackwell wasn’t involved and wasn’t even identified yet.
Finally able to get on with his life in some aspects, three years later at the age of thirty eight, Sirius resides with his best friend of so many years, Claire. The two have finally become the couple they were always destined to be – partners in crime and partners in life. He also learned of a fifteen year old girl, whom he found out was his daughter, from the affair he had had so many years ago. Now he must figure out how to protect her from the dangers of being in his life.
Physically, Sirius goes through each day dealing with a dull throbbing in his right knee and on occasion his lower back - something that is unavoidable after all the years of injuries. He wears a knee brace on a daily basis, runs less than he used to and though he hates it, he has had to deal with the limitations of his body. Mentally, he is finally starting to get better, finally coming out of the anger fueled depression and instead focusing his efforts on keeping his new family - Claire and Juliette - safe, and ensuring that The Order of the Phoenix is ready for everything that is to come.
