That night, Sirius had been sitting at his desk across from Claire well past the time they were supposed to call it a night – there was a team of aurors set to work over night as there always was but it had been years since either of them had left work at a “decent hour”. A month ago, Sirius might have given in to his exhaustion and told Claire to meet him at home – but now that he was back in the office after weeks of healing up after their last encounter with the Nex, he was practically on autopilot, working intensely for hours from his desk to get anything he could done. Planning for the order, making a more accurate list of known Nex locations (noting which were active headquarters and which were abandoned, thanks to some surprising help from Blaine when he had finally turned up after being taken by Blackwell) and generally pushing himself to find a way to put an end to all of this.
As he sat there pushing through file after file, scribbling things down on a notepad and occasionally asking Claire a question here and there, he had no idea that the leader of the Nex had just struck again. It wasn’t until a patronus met his and Claire’s desks, from a neighbor of his cousin’s, saying that they had thought they heard screams coming from his cousin’s house. Immediately, Sirius looked up at Claire and told her to gather a team – he wasn’t supposed to be actively working, but there was no way in hell he was going to stay behind and worry about more of his family. In a matter of minutes, Claire had a team together and though she would normally be the first to tell him to stay behind since he had only just come back to work, she didn’t argue or try and stop him from going with her and finding out what was going on.
When they got to the London town home, Sirius was greeted by an all too familiar feeling, a scene that was unrealistically similar to the way his own home had looked the day his life was turned upside down. It was hard to take in – Blackwell was behind this one personally, that was for sure; and the only reason Sirius could see for it, was because they were related to him and Albus. It was a terrifying thought, that there was no possible way to protect his whole family – not when the family was as large and spread out as his is. Through the whole thing, he managed to keep it together – though the anger built in him once again – a burning that hadn’t entirely settled since his daughter had been kidnapped a month earlier; even though she was safe now, even the thought put a little bit of that anger back into him.
They had gotten there too late – his cousin Lucy and her husband were gone – but their three children, thank God they had been left alive. Two of the three were relatively unharmed – but poor Winnifred had been through hell that night. Sirius had been the one who found her, bloody and barely alive – he had apparated her to St. Mungo’s where his cousin Torie had immediately started tending to her; he was soon followed by another auror with her siblings. He made sure they were settled in, and had an auror go and get their grandfather, his Uncle Percy, to ensure they wouldn’t be alone while he went back to their house to do his job with the rest of the aurors.
That was nearly a week ago – and it had been a long week between adding to the files related to him and Albus and the Nex, checking in with Juliette as often as he was able and working endless hours with Claire to determine what the Order’s next move should be, he was tired, still very sore, but more determined than ever that they would be putting an end to this at all costs and soon. That morning he had receive an owl from his cousin Torie – Winnifred was doing much better, she would be able to go stay with her grandfather and siblings soon – and if he needed to get her account of the night, he was welcome to come by now that she was almost healed up.
In both an attempt to ensure Winnifred was doing better, and as a part of his job, Sirius knew he would have to go and visit her; but he didn’t even know where to begin. He knew the last thing she would want to talk about was everything that had happened that night – and he couldn’t blame her, he knew how painful it would be for her. Unfortunately, he also knew he didn’t have much of a choice and it was probably better that it was him – an at least somewhat familiar face, rather than a total stranger. Sirius told Claire he would be back in a couple hours and left the auror office for St. Mungo’s.
Running on very little sleep these days, Sirius looked fairly run down as he limped through the hospital – immediately the intense smells and his hatred for this place made him wish he were anywhere else. It had only been a few weeks since he had been in here again himself – after saving Juliette – and he really hadn’t been a hurry to be back in this building. He pushed those thoughts from his mind, preparing himself to talk things over with Winnifred, hoping maybe with her help, he could figure out who else had been with Cato Blackwell that night. He would promise her that he would get the person that did this to her, to her family – and he knew for a fact one day soon, they would.
Sirius got to her room and knocked on the door, slowly pushing it open and poking his head in first. ”Winnie?” he said softly. ”Aunt Torie said you were up for a visitor – do you mind if I come so we can talk for a bit? he asked her. He knew it would be incredibly difficult for her to talk about what happened – but he also knew that it would help them finally catch unidentified members of the Nex who could lead them to Blackwell.

Winnifred was alone after the last healer had left. She wished they would stop coming in. Winnie didn’t want to see anyone. Her Aunt Tori said that she shouldn’t be that way, that she should be around other people and not isolate herself. She just ignored her. Days started to get longer in there and she more dreams about what had happened. She wouldn’t even have to be asleep to see it play over in her mind again. She had refused aurors coming to talk to her about it. They did ask her not to tell her Uncle Sirius that they were there thought. Maybe they weren’t supposed to be there. She didn’t care anymore. She heard a knock on the door and like always she instantly turned to look at the door getting anxious. It was probably another healer coming to check on her but, after what happened she didn’t want to take the chances. Like always she grabbed her wand that was on the table beside her bed. She pointed it at the door, her hand was shaking. She saw that it was her Uncle Sirius but her wand arm never went down. She was still shaking and though he was talking to her memories came flooding back about that night. Since her uncle was here that meant she had to talk about it again. Tell him things that the monsters did to her, to her siblings (thought it wasn’t much), and to her parents and how she was made to watch it all before being hurt herself. Tagged: James Sirius Potter
